Paul Sun-Hyung Lee


Best known for his role as “Appa” on the CBC television show “Kim’s Convenience,” Paul Sun-Hyung Lee is a Korean-Canadian actor originally from Daejeon, South Korea. Paul was only three months old when his family immigrated to Canada where they lived in London, Toronto and Calgary. When Paul turned 18 he moved back to Toronto to attend the drama program at the University of Toronto, however he did not complete the program.

Paul’s first ever television/movie appearance was in Gideon Oliver, a television series in 1989 where he appeared in one episode of the crime drama. His first major appearance on-screen was in the movie Ice Princess (2005) where he had a supporting role as Tiffany’s father. Other notable movie and television appearances include the Global Television soap opera Train 58 from 2003 to 2005, the television series Rogue, Shoot the Messenger and Kim’s Convenience.

The television series Kim’s Convenience was originally a play that debuted at the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival by Ins Choi. The CBC television series premiered on October 11, 2016 based on the original play. In the series, Paul plays ‘Appa’ Kim who owns a convenience store in downtown Toronto and immigrated to Toronto from Korea in the 80’s to set up shop near Regent Park and had two kids.

Paul has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions for his role in Kim’s Convenience including two Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations for an Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Principal Role, the Toronto Theatre Critics’ Award for Best Actor in 2012, and a Canadian Screen Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Comedic Role in 2017.

Currently, Paul has appeared as Dr. Borsin in the television series Dark Matter (2017) and the film 22 Chaser where Paul has starred as Officer Welland is in the post-production stage.
