Hon. Harry Bloy, Minister of State for Multiculturalism (ret’d) & Government Liaison to the Korean Community

Harry Bloy served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the BC Liberals from 2001 to 2013, representing the residents of Burquitlam and Burnaby-Lougheed. During his later years in government, he served as Minister of Social Development and Minister of State for Multiculturalism. He had also served on the Government Caucus Committee for Natural Resources and Economy, and several Select Standing Committees. As Minister of State for Multiculturalism, he was the government liaison to the Korean community. He was born in Sudbury, Ontario in 1936 and married his wife Anita in 1977. They have lived in the constituency since 1978 and have three children: Jeremy, Katie, and Candice.

Before serving as an MLA, Mr. Bloy was the President of a local telecommunications company. He received a marketing diploma from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto and worked as a systems analyst before moving into retail. He started as a district manager and became national marketing manager for a countrywide retail chain. Mr. Bloy then opened a series of convenience stores with his brother beginning in 1979. Over the next 12 years, they would develop, operate, and expand the chain before selling the business. In the early 1990s, Mr. Bloy became involved in several businesses including the distribution of dairy products and in an executive office leasing company.

Mr. Bloy has been an active volunteer in the community. He served on the board of directors and was a founding member of the Burnaby Optimist Club. He also served on the Regional Council of Scouts Canada – Burnaby Region, Burquitlam Community Association, Burnaby Mountain Mantas Summer Swim Club, Burnaby Arts Council as former President, Burnaby Minor Lacrosse, and District Parent Advisory Council. He has also volunteered his time at many community events and projects including the Healthy Heart Fun Run and Walk, Mothers March of Dimes, and the BC Summer Games. Mr. Bloy’s hobbies include walking, photography, gardening, and volunteering.
