Redvers Carman Butler

Redvers Carman Butler: In the Royal Canadian Regiment 2nd Battalion
and His Service in Korea

We landed in Pusan May 3rd, 1951.

I became attached to a company #2 platoon and we were assigned to the Song-Gok Spur in October of 1951.

On November 4 1951 we were attacked around 5 p.m. by a battalion of Chinese and became completely surrounded.  We managed to hold them off until after 4 a.m. the next morning, when after our ammunition was running low and we had 1 killed and 18 wounded, we were given permission to withdraw from our position, back to the main lines.  So they had to fight their way through the enemy to get back to the main lines.

While giving my bren-gunner covering fire, I was knocked unconscious and fell backwards into our fox hole.  When I regained consciousness, I could hear some heavy breathing in our slit trench.  It seemed like an enemy had used our trench for cover and I was trapped.  So I played possum.

When the enemy was pulling out the next morning, they were in the habit of throwing a hand grenade into each foxhole, as it was too dangerous to try to enter each foxhole in case there was an enemy waiting to shoot.

The next morning as the sun was rising, I made my way back to the main lines and had my wounds treated.

There is a bit more to tell but I will save that for some other time when I have more space.
