Rose of Sharon

Introduction to the organization Love for Rose of Sharon

Love for Rose of Sharon disseminated Korea’s national flower, rose of Sharon, to Canada. The organization was formed on April 12, 2003 in Toronto with a love for Korea to widely spread the appreciation for rose of Sharon in this country. To date, the organization distributed more than 2,500 roses of Sharon to the Korean Canadian Cultural Association, Korean Consulate in Toronto, and Embassy of Korea in Ottawa, as well as to Toronto parks and many families. In particular, the organization created rose of Sharon gardens in parks across Toronto, such as James Gardens, Edwards Gardens, Alexander Muir Memorial Gardens Moore, Earlscourt Park, rose of Sharon peace complex, rose of Sharon Memorial Garden, and Eden Farm. In so doing, the organization helped Koreans feel patriotism and pride, and played an important role in bridging the friendship between Korea and Canada by drawing out the admiration of Canadians.

The business of developing rose of Sharon gardens will be largely expanded as the management and maintenance department of Toronto Parks, Forestry & Recreation, at this year’s annual general meeting, raised the rose of Sharon as a special item in the agenda and encouraged managers of each park to create rose of Sharon gardens.

The four currently existing rose of Sharon gardens in Canada are deemed some of the finest rose of Sharon gardens in the world. Along with the Remembrance Day events for those who served in the Korean War, these gardens will play a meaningful part in strengthening the bonds between Korea and Canada.
